    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Not much at all early... later on though, the play is generally tighter as there are no antes involved. That's really the #1 difference - no antes in PL

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: either try to play a smaller pot due to your position, or play them very fast if it's a hand you're willing to committ your stack to pre-flop... it also depends a lot on your opponent. Hard to give a simple answer - a book could be written about that.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: so far in my short career, online for sure... but I mix in a lot of live play as well, especially WPT and WSOP events

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: It varies as tourneys start up of course, but I'm usually on 8 - 10, sometimes as many as 16 - 18 at once on some sundays

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I'll play some $2500 NPL events at Venetian just after thanksgiving, and then lots of events including the main in the WPT series at Bellagio in December

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: There's no right answer - it all depends on your style and preference... for me, it's MTTs b/c I love the idea of a potential big score for a relatively small buyin.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: There's less to worry about online, especially in regards to tells, but overall, yes, playing 8+ tables online simultaneously requires more concentration than playing live

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Both players are amazing with difference strengths, certainly two of the best and two of my favorite.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: There are a few good, very comprehensive books out there. Definitely check out Scott "BigRiskky" Clement's articles on Omaha in new Bluff Mags though... he's got 2 bracelets in omaha in 2 years - an incredible player - also just won WPT Niagra lst wk

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Not really... I get some people making loose calls for the bounty, but this can help me more than hurt me at times :)

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Not percentage-wise - but the most brutal was in the NL event that Hellmuth won this year. I had a great stack, but took 22nd when I got all in with 89 vs 88 on a 7JT7 board... he spiked the 8 on the river. B/C of the situation, that's my most brutal

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Get up ~2 - 4pm, play online from ~5 - 10pm, hang out with my g/f and friends from then 'til ~4am... dinner, movies, live poker, bowling, concerts, etc... (tough life :))

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Games overall are definitely tougher than they were 2 or 3 years ago... but all good players have to constantly make adjustments. That's part of what makes poker a beautiful game.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I've played for about 4 years... on an average day I play about 5 - 6 hours online, and on the weekends about 10-12hours/day... I take 1 - 3 days off most weeks.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Online overall I suppose, but there are times when that opinion changes. A great thing about living in Henderson (right outside of Vegas) is that I can go play live whenever I need a break from online.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Generally play very tight, solid, pot controlled poker, waiting for a huge hand before playing a big pot.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: About 3 years... I never played at all until late 2003, then by late 2004, I was pretty much playing for a living. I moved to Vegas soon after.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Take a break, get yourself refocused, move down in stakes if you need to in order to get a winning session in even if it's much lower than you're used to.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Win your races, make proper adjustments according to blind increases, and pay attention to how everyone at your table is playing.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: about 12 - 15 I believe. I haven't had a lot of success so far. I've bubbled several (including the WPT championship in '06), really bad luck near the bubble. I got 12th this January in Borgata for $72k - my only WPT ME cash so far :-/

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: FTP chose to stick with a lot of online player's online nicknames instead of using their real names when they recently signed us... because this is how most people know us - see TheWacoKidd, Imsolucky0, nordberg, dmmikkel

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: It's the toughest style to play, but it certainly offers the most rewards.

  • QUESTION FROM johnfallon: i'm playing my first major tourney sunday in event #7 from a satalite -- any special considerations you make for large field stuff like this? my biggeest beforehand was a $50 buy in 180ppl. took 4th.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Do your best to forget about the buy in. It's a marathon, so don't worry about how many people are left or whether you are above or below average - just concentrate on your table.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: annette_15, imper1um, lilholdem (jse81), GB2005, apestyles, SCTrojans, belowabove, pokerpr033, too many more to name

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I had already moved to Vegas, grinded out cash games on the strip for a living, and "discovered" and done well in a lot of live tourneys before I tried online. So I already had the bankroll to play "big" online mtts before I ever began online.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Yes, I started with live tournaments before online - see question above - Daniel Negreanu and Kirk Morrisson are a lot of fun to play with live b/c I love their style and they're very friendly guys, but definitely not easy to play against.

  • QUESTION FROM themaysgdtrfb: what are your rules on low pocket pairs before the flop, would you usually call anything less than 10 10

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I have no set rules, but generally you should call a raise if you have about 12 - 15:1 implied odds with low - mid pairs... you've got to experiment with it from there though.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Yes... but online b/c I see more hands online. Percentage-wise, it evens out.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Just on occasion to mix things up. I usually play 10 - 12 of them at a time when I do play, but very low stakes.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I learned by playing home games during college almost every night for about a year before I moved to Vegas. A lot of us would experiment with different styles of play and learn a lot from each other. Many of these guys are still good friends.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: The natural appeal of playing a game for a living :) But I didn't make the move until I was already making a good living just playing as a hobby. I'd never recommend trying to play professionally unless you've already proven that you can do it.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Hardly anyone alive can claim to play by "instinct" as well as lilholdem

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Negreanu, b/c he plays a similar style to me (much better though of course), and tries to have as much fun with the game as he can.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Jamie Gold of course - noone else proclaims to want to be the best bluffer in the world nearly as much as him! Seriously though, it's probably someone who everyone perceives as very tight and who takes full advantage of his/her image.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: You don't have to be as aggressive later on as it's not nearly as valuable as in NL to steal (obv b/c no antes)

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Probably not, I'm not a big fan of AC at all - I love the Borgata though.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I make a few notes from time to time, but I've never used any sort of software

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I have two monitors with my desktop, and on rare occasion, I use my laptop as well if I'm on about 14+

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Generally, slow and steady

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Probably 6 or 7 times, I busted from a $50 deposit way back in the day. But that was bak in late 2003 when I first started playing and just dabbled with small cash games online... I've never busted online since I got into mtts in late 2005

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I usually can only go by betting patterns, but when I'm on so many tables, I can only truly focus on the most important ones (biggest buy ins / prize pools)

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Very, very small amounts from time to time, but nothing like what I know a lot of other poker players to do.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: The strategy archives at www.pocketfives.com are almost TOO good for mtt play

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Probably about 4 or 5k both winning and losing in a live cash game. I don't play many cash games though and always at very low stakes relative to my bankroll when I do.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: Hellmuth tournament, Matesow cash game

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: The NL section in supersystem helped me out a lot playing cash games when I first started out. I haven't read any poker books besides Harrington's for several years though

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: I prefer NL as the antes generate a lot more aciton and make the game more interesting.

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: 18th in a $3k NL WSOP tourney in the 2005 series for $19k. That was my first year in Vegas, I only played 2 events, and I gave more tournaments a shot due to that success.

  • QUESTION FROM Piffle: Jon, will you always go bust with AK on say an A73 rainbow flop to a set of 7's or 3's??? Or is there a way to sniff out sets?

    ANSWER FROM PearlJammed: It depends how deep stacked you are and your knowledge of your opponent, but generally speaking, in the very early stages of a tournament, I won't go broke with one pair.
