Renaud Desferet

When quantitative analyst Renaud Desferet bought his ticket to the now-cult classic movie ‘Rounders’ in 1999, he could not have anticipated the effect it would have upon his life. Instantly smitten by the poker bug, he embarked on a journey that would take him from his job in an asset management company to a career as one of the most successful poker players France has ever produced.

With a highly logical mind, honed from his years as an analyst, Renaud took to poker naturally. It became a lifestyle choice – a professional hobby – rather than merely a means to an end, and he is still a firm believer in the virtues of the game. “Never think of poker as a way to make money,” he says. “Always be both passionate and humble.”

Renaud, who splits his time between his homes in Paris and New York, is currently an instructor for Team Limpers – a collection of professional players who offer their expertise to new students of the game. He has a wealth of experience to draw from, including many years playing with some of the best players in the world, and a deep understanding of the technical aspects of the game that allows him to help new players reach their potential.

Living proof of the power of passion and humility in poker, Renaud has carved out a reputation as an online maestro. He initially specialized in Limit Hold ‘em, but has since enjoyed huge success in No-Limit Hold ‘em and Pot-Limit Omaha, focusing mainly on ring game play.

Renaud cites Phil Ivey as his main influence at the tables. “Ivey’s consistency in every single game, and at the highest level, is so impressive,” he says. Consistency, he believes, along with logical thinking, is the backbone of a successful player.

Away from the tables, Renaud enjoys golf, astrophysics, playing violin and spending time with his family.
