For a guy that just started tournament play in 2006, Roy Winston has developed an impressive record by anyone’s standards. A medical doctor from Rancho Mirage, California, he’s earned over $2.5 million since then. Given this level of success, it’s no wonder that Roy made the decision to pursue poker full-time as of 2008.

Roy’s first foray onto the tournament scene was the 2006 WPT LA Poker Classic No-Limit Hold ‘em Championship. He went deep in the $10K event and took home over $39K – not too bad for an opener. Roy finished out 2006 with four more cash finishes, including two at Bellagio Cup II tournament events.

His record only improved in 2007. After cashing in an earlier WSOP event, Roy worked his way through the starting field of 6,358 players in the Main Event to take 26th place and better than $333K. Not one to let the cards get cold, he followed this with a first-place finish in the WPT No-Limit hold ‘em Championship at the Borgata. He earned well over $1.5 million for his victory.

2008 marked the beginning of Roy’s shift in careers from an accomplished MD to full-time professional poker player. True to form, he made two final tables at the Aussie Millions in January to take home over $45K. Given his previous record and a start like that, it looks like his decision to go pro was the right one.

As busy as he is, Roy’s got a wide range of interests outside of poker. When he’s not working his way to a final table, he enjoys golf, hiking, and scuba. Roy’s also a pilot and loves to fly whenever he gets the chance.
